Working With XML Log Files

The user activity logs allow you to track various tasks and events occurring in the application, such as when records are modified. These log records include a snapshot of the record before and after the user made a change. Other logs detail important application security events, such as attempted logins, invalid password entered, and failed authentication challenges.

The steps below provide a basic overview into opening and viewing an exported log file using a spreadsheet application (in this case Microsoft® Office Excel®). Consult your particular spreadsheet application for specific instructions.

To export and store a log search

  1. Choose Administration | Customer Log.
  2. Choose the customer from the drop-down menu or leave the field blank to search on all customers.
  3. Enter your criteria in the appropriate field(s), or leave the fields blank to display all log records.
  4. Click Submit Search.
  5. You may view an individual log by clicking it, or choose Export to generate a file of your search results.
  6. Browse to the download location and then click Save.

To open the exported XML file in table format

  1. Navigate to the file location.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Open with | Microsoft Office Excel.
  3. If necessary, choose the option to display the data As an XML table and then click OK. Click OK on the schema notification message, if applicable.

The data will display in a searchable and sortable columnar format, with information such as the date the action occurred, the user name of the login profile that performed the action, and the IP address of the incoming request or processing machine. Information in the log detail file is displayed in ascending order of the date of the recorded action.
